If you are in the market for a swimming pool, and would like to save anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 then you should strongly consider DYI pool kits.  With Do It Yourself Pool Kits you have two basic options – the above ground the inground pool kit.  In this article we will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each, hopefully giving you a better idea of which kind would be best for your situation.

Above Ground DIY Pool Kits:

Pool Kits

Pool Kits

Above ground kits have several advantages.  First and foremost they are cheap pool kits – much cheaper than any other type of real pool (sorry, no kiddy or blow-up pools allowed for the comparison).  In fact, you can get a good one for around $2,000.  In addition, installing above ground pool kits is much easier and less time consuming than inground kits. You can usually get the installation done in three days, and most people can install them without too many problems.

However, their are two potential issues with above ground kits. First, they are not as aesthetically pleasing as a normal pool. This can be overcome if you can build a deck or something similar around the pool, much like people do with hot tubs…but this also increases your costs. Second, they are not generally as big and deep as regular pools. It is not very common to find a 10 foot deep pool above the ground.

Inground DIY Pool Kits

Inground kits are much more like traditional pools.  As far as costs go, they are much cheaper than regular pools, with savings between $5,000 and $15,000 on average, especially if you install it yourself.  They look great – you really won’t be able to tell the difference, as they look just like a regular swimming pool.

However, installing inground or semi inground pool kits can be much more involved and tricky to do.  As far as do it yourself pool kits go, they are the most difficult.  However, do not let this stop you, as almost everyone who attempts to install them does accomplish the task (one supplier we talked to even mentioned that they recently had a librarian and painter who were able to finish the job.

Another issue that you will want to consider with these kits is which type of material to get.  Cheap pool kits (inground that is) my be made from Polymer frames, which are less sturdy than steel frame pools – which can be damaged not just while you use the pool but also can be damaged and warp during installation.

Summary

Overall, deciding to go with a DIY pool kit can be a very smart decision. While it does require work on your part, it is well worth it, helping you save thousands of dollars when compared to what you would pay for other swimming pool types.
