Lap Pool: An Overview

Everyone loves to be outside in summertime, but sometimes it gets hot.  A lap pool is a good addition to any backyard or home as it has a variety of uses.  They can be used recreationally for family fun time, or as everyday exercise equipment.  They are can also be placed indoors for year round use if you live somewhere cold.  Indoor lap pools are ideal for low impact year round exercising.  The water also provides resistance so you get the equivalent of a weight workout and a cardio workout at the same time.

These pools are narrow construction and do not take up a lot of space.  They are rectangular in shape and generally 7 feet by 28 feet by 7 feet deep.  These dimensions can fit in almost any backyard as an in ground lap pool, but if you are worried about space and would like the flexibility of moving the pool around, above ground lap pools are also an option.   Above ground lap pools are beneficial because you can put them anywhere: in the garage, on a patio, indoors, in your backyard.  It is also possible to take your pool with you if you move.  Although lap pools cost varies by design and features you can obtain a basic above ground one for about $2500.

Lap pools can be made from a variety of materials including fiberglass, which is considered the superior option, especially for in ground lap pools.  This material is smooth and nonabrasive, which is a benefit, no more ruined swimsuits or scraped feet on rough surfaces.  This surface also hampers the growth of algae and no resurfacing or residing is necessary.  Vinyl is usually the material of choice for an above ground pool, which is no problem as it is much cheaper; however it is prone to algae growth.  Therefore if this pool is what you decide to go with, make sure you have an abundant supply of chlorine to prevent the algae growth and keep the water safe to swim in.  Vinyl is a durable material, but will eventually have to be replaced.  However, if a vinyl sided pool is what is within your budget it is still a good choice and will provide your family with many years of use.

In ground pools are also a viable option with lap pools.  There are some distinct advantages when choosing and in ground pool.  They are easier to customize for your personal choice as well as they are installed carefully by professionals.  When professionals do the work there is often a warranty that covers their work, which will be useful if you encounter any problems.  No matter which home lap pool option you go with they are a good investment that will allow you to exercise and have fun with your family for many years.
