If you are a new pool owner there are a lot of accessories you are probably thinking about purchasing for you pool, some necessary, others more for fun. A pool cover pump is more than likely on the list of things to research and purchase.

Having invested the money in your pool, you want to take good care of it. A swimming pool cover pump is an excellent device to help you do just that. The pump will remove the water and debris from the top of your pool cover, helping you maintain the quality of the cover, and avoid dumping the excess water into your clean pool.

Plan on spending anywhere from thirty to just over two hundred dollars. How much you will end up spending depends on the quality of the pump, the size of you pool, and how fast you want the job done. There are pumps with filters that keep the debris from clogging the machine, automatically detect when there is water and the pump, and that can be fully immersed in water.

One of the most popular pumps on the market is the rule pool cover pump. This model (H53SP-24) has a screen at the base that strains out any debris. It is computerized and checks for water every two and one half minutes. If it detects water at least one inch deep, it then pumps until the water level reaches ¾ inch deep. It is inexpensive to run. It pumps at 1800 gallons per hour. The water exits the unit through a garden hose that has been attached to the pump. This pump will cost you close to $150.

The Little Giant pcp550 is another pool cover water pump you may want to consider. It is less expensive than the Rule model. If you purchase the Little Giant model you will save about $100. This is likely because this model only pumps at 550 gallons per hour. It also doesn’t feature an on/off switch and simply turns on as soon as it is plugged in. Like the rule, it also comes with a 24 ft power cord. If you have a smaller pool that won’t need a lot of water removal from the cover, this could be a good option for you.

You can opt not to purchase pool cover pumps. If you do opt out, it will be necessary for you to hire a pool company to remove the water off the top of your pool cover in order to properly care for your pool. This will cost you much more that buying a pump for your own use. Or you could siphon the water off the pool cover yourself. This would be a very time-consuming strategy compared to using a pump.

Purchasing a pump will make your swimming pool experience much better. Shop around a little to find the best pool cover pump for you.
