May 12, 2010 – 12:36 am

If you are looking to save some money on a swimming pool, then you have probably looked into swimming pool kits. Going with a swimming pool kit can be a great way to save money and still get a great pool that suits your needs. However, finding information on what exactly you need to consider beforer you make this purchase can be somewhat difficult. In this post we hope to clarify a few of these issues, giving you clear idea as to what you can expect if you decide to go this route with your pool.

Swimming Pool Kits

Swimming Pool Kits Can Be Great Fun

First of all, you need to know what your options are as to which kinds of pool kits are available. Basically, there are two main kind of kits – above ground swimming pool kits, and inground swimming pool kits. Each has it’s own advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages of above ground pool kits:

Above ground swimming pools are great for the following reasons:

  • Cheap – they are relatively cheaper than other options.
  • You don’t have to dig a hole in your ground, which makes it easier and cheaper to install the pool kit. Many of these kits are able to be self-installed, but they can also be professionally installed if you don’t feel like you are capable of doing the job yourself.
  • They are portable. If you move you can disassemble the pool and take it with you

Advantages of Inground Pool Kits

Inground kits also have some very distinct advantages:

  1. They are cheaper than traditional gunite pools, traditional fiberglass pools (although many kits are fiberglass pool kits),  and concrete pools.
  2. They are more aesthetically pleasing than above ground pools.  While some people like to build a deck around the above ground pools, with inground ones you don’t have to do this – they look like regular pools.

Second, after you decide which type of pool kit you are going to go with you have to decide which swimming pool kit pump and which filter to choose.  Generally speaking, the manufacturer will have some type of package deal that includes all the them, and this can be a good way to go as long as 1) you save money, and 2) you get good quality parts.  Also, remember not to purchase a swimming pool kit filter or pump that is ‘too much’ for what you need – it’s a very common misconception that you want the biggest pump/filter available, which is not the case – you want the one that is the most adequate for the job.

Finally, you need to decide how to install the swimming pool kit.  For many people, a professional is needed, but for some more adventurous types a DIY installation can be very fun and exciting.  We will discuss how to install each type of pool in another post (one each for above ground pool kit installation and inground swimming pool kit installation).

Bottom Line

Swimming pool kits can not only save you a lot of money, but they can provide you with some excellent swimming fun.  Just make sure you know what you are doing and know your options beforehand, as even though they are cheaper than traditional pools, they still will cost a few thousand dollars.
